Lethargy

What is Lethargy?

Lethargy, or fatigue, is a common experience for aging men. A lack of energy can have a variety of compounding effects, including interfering with daily tasks, romantic relationships, and career success. Fatigue may not only affect your physical energy levels but your mental cognitiontoo. It may make it harder to pay attention, remember things, or do basic reasoning. This can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening. If you’ve been feeling unlike yourself for these reasons, it may be caused by low hormone levels, a common symptom of which is chronic lethargy.

What Causes Lethargy?

Many things can cause low energy, including insufficient sleep, poor diet, stress, and too much or too little exercise. However, men often experience low energy as a result of low testosterone. Some men may naturally have low testosterone levels or experience it as a result of a health condition. It’s common for men to experience a decline in testosterone as they age, however. Low testosterone can cause a variety of effects (similar to menopause in women), such as low energy, loss of bone and muscle mass, depression, erectile dysfunction, hot flashes, and more.

Lethargy Symptoms

Lethargy can be an overall feeling of tiredness and sluggishness. Although everyone experiences sleepiness or drowsiness from time to time, fatigue is a constant state of low energy. It can be very noticeable from day to day, especially if you previously felt energetic and vibrant. You may experience symptoms like:

  • Sleepiness during the day
  • Lack of physical and mental energy
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty concentrating or focusing
  • Lack of motivation (even for things you enjoy doing)
  • Moodiness and irritability
  • Apathy

Fatigue often occurs alongside conditions such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Our providers can help you determine whether your fatigue can be treated by addressing low hormone levels versus other underlying causes.

Lethargy Treatment

For many men, low energy can be treated by supplementing hormone levels. You’ll discuss your symptoms with our providers and learn more about how you can improve your symptoms. This might include implementing lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and dedicated exercise. Testosterone replacement therapy can have a variety of benefits for men, including increased energy levels, better cognitive function, improved mood, better-quality sleep, enhanced muscle mass, and greater sexual function. Our providers will help you understand the best route for hormone therapy based on your unique needs.
