What is a Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the labia, or the folds of skin around the vaginal opening. Women have two folds of skin; the outer folds are called the labia majora and protect the external genital organs and are covered with pubic hair. The inner folds are known as the labia minora, which protect the opening of the urethra and vagina.
Labia can become oversized due to many factors, including aging, menopause, pregnancy and childbirth, weight fluctuations, and genetics.

VIEW GALLERYWho is a Candidate?
There are a variety of reasons why a woman may choose to undergo this procedure, including the following.
- To reduce the size of the labia minora so that they do not extend beyond the labia majora
- To reduce physical discomfort associated with excess labial tissue
- To improve hygiene, since excess tissue can make cleaning difficult
Overall, healthy individuals who wish to undergo a labiaplasty due to any of the above reasons may be good candidates. A consultation appointment with a skilled provider is the first step toward achieving these personal goals.
The Labiaplasty Procedure
When it comes to reducing the size of the labia minora and/or majora, there are three main techniques used today including the trim procedure and the wedge procedure. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
Rim Labiaplasty
During this approach, excess tissue is removed from the outer edge of one or both sides of the labia minora until it is even with the edges of the labia majora.
Complete Labiaplasty
This procedure, also referred to as the Barbie look labiaplasty, removes all of the labia minora so that the labia minora are no longer visible.
Hybrid Labiaplasty
This procedure removes more of the labia minora than the rim labiaplasty, but less than the complete labiaplasty.
Recovery
Following labiaplasty, swelling and discomfort are to be expected; ice packs and pain medication can help with this. An oral or topical antibiotic may also be prescribed to prevent infection. Most patients will take a week off from work to recover from this procedure. While most swelling is gone by six weeks, some residual swelling may take up to six months to resolve. There is usually little to no scarring once the area is fully healed.
