Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

What is Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder?

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is a sexual dysfunction that causes low sex drive in women. While it is normal for an individual’s sexual desire to fluctuate, a woman with HSDD will experience a lack of sexual desire for six months or longer. Common symptoms associated with HSDD include:

  • Disinterest in initiating sex
  • Little to no interest in sex
  • Few to no sexual thoughts
  • Lack of pleasurable sensations during sex

HSDD may also be caused by emotional factors, including:

  • A history of sexual abuse
  • A history of low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety
  • Trust issues with a sex partner

Diagnosing Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

There is no specific test to diagnose this condition. However, there are some methods that doctors can use to diagnose HSDD. There are a number of factors that may play a role in this condition, including physical and emotional. A pelvic exam may be performed, as well as a blood test to check hormone levels. There are also certain medications that may negatively affect sex drive, such as antidepressants. Providers will take this into consideration when diagnosing HSDD.

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder Treatment Options

The treatment method used to address HSDD depends on the underlying cause and may include one or a combination of the following:

Medications

There is a selection of medications that can be used to improve the symptoms of HSDD. These include Flibanserin to increase sexual desire in premenopausal women, testosterone therapy, Bremelanotide, and estrogen.

Lifestyle Changes

Certain lifestyle changes to reduce stress and improve a woman’s libido may also be helpful. Effective changes include exercising regularly, setting time aside for intimacy, avoiding substances that may affect sexual desire like alcohol and tobacco, and practicing stress-relieving techniques such as meditation.

Counseling

In cases where emotional issues are the cause of HSDD, counseling may be recommended to help individuals communicate better with their partner, as well as discover sexual techniques for a more pleasurable experience.
