Hypogonadism

What is Hypogonadism?

Hypogonadism is a condition where the male sex glands (the gonads) produce insufficient testosterone. With low testosterone levels, men can experience a variety of symptoms that interfere with their overall health and wellness. The most common reason for hypogonadism in women is menopause, and it’s common for men to experience something similar as they get older (sometimes known as andropause).

What Causes Hypogonadism?

There are two types of hypogonadism which are categorized based on the problem area.

Primary Hypogonadism

This type of hypogonadism means the testicles don’t function properly, producing an insufficient amount of testosterone. Primary hypogonadism can be the result of genetic conditions, radiation treatments, fetal abnormalities, infections, or even injuries.

Secondary Hypogonadism

Secondary hypogonadism means the testicles don’t function properly because of a problem with the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain. Conditions or medications which affect these areas of the brain can be responsible for hypogonadism. It can also be linked to aging and obesity.

Hypogonadism Symptoms

Low testosterone levels can cause many noticeable effects in men. These include:

  • Decreased sex drive and sexual function
  • Low energy
  • Decreased muscle mass and increased body weight
  • Moodiness and irritability
  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Hot flashes

These symptoms can be disruptive to your daily health and well-being, interfering with your ability to do well at your job, enjoy your hobbies, and live a vibrant and active lifestyle. Our providers can learn more about your symptoms and help you develop a personalized treatment plan accordingly.

Hypogonadism Treatment

Low testosterone levels can easily be treated with testosterone replacement therapy. By supplementing vital testosterone in the body, many men experience higher energy levels, better mental clarity, improved sex drive, and much more. What are the symptoms of hypogonadism in males?

Hypogonadism typically causes symptoms like low sex drive, decreased muscle mass, reduced energy levels, and more. In some men, it can also cause mood problems like depression, agitation, or mood swings.

Can hypogonadism be cured?

The most effective treatment for hypogonadism is hormone replacement. Currently, there’s no cure for hypogonadism, but many men can drastically increase their quality of life with hormone replacement therapy.

What is the main cause of hypogonadism?

Hypogonadism is primarily caused by genetic abnormalities of the testes, which decrease the amount of testosterone produced. It may also be caused by a natural decline in hormone levels as men age.

Can you live a normal life with hypogonadism?

Low hormone levels can cause disruptive symptoms, meaning many men with hypogonadism require hormone replacement therapy on a regular basis. Fortunately, hormone replacement therapy can help men more effectively live day-to-day.

What is the average age for hypogonadism?

The average age of men experiencing hypogonadism is around 60 years, meaning it’s more common in middle-aged and older men, but it can occur in men of any age.
