What is Clitoral Unroofing?

If you have feelings of frustration or embarrassment around being unable to orgasm during sex, you’re not alone. Many women have difficulty being satisfied during sexual activity and for a vast number of reasons. One reason not often talked about is the anatomy of your vulva and clitoris. For some women, orgasm is extremely difficult to achieve because the clitoris doesn’t receive enough stimulation, even with tools or aids. If this seems familiar, then an intimate health provider can help you explore your options – including a unique, in-office procedure called clitoral unroofing. Here’s what you need to know about this procedure here at Tideline Center for Health & Aesthetics.

The Basics of Clitoral Anatomy

To understand clitoral unroofing, it’s important to understand the anatomy of the clitoris. The clitoris is analogous to the male penis in that it contains many nerve endings that react to stimulation during sex. Like an uncircumcised penis, it’s surrounded by skin (the clitoral hood) that keeps it protected from overstimulation outside of sexual situations. When you become aroused, this skin retracts and allows for easier contact.

Some women experience something called clitoral phimosis, a condition where the clitoral hood doesn’t retract as it needs to. It may be similar to phimosis of the foreskin in men. In the case of clitoral phimosis, you may not receive enough sexual stimulation simply because the clitoral hood doesn’t allow for it. Some women experience clitoral phimosis because of adhesions or because the hood has become fused to the clitoris. Others experience clitoral phimosis because of their natural anatomy. All these complications can be corrected with clitoral unroofing.

How Clitoral Unroofing Works

Clitoral unroofing is a minimally invasive procedure that manipulates the clitoral hood from the clitoris, exposing more of the glans or nub. By doing this, it allows the clitoral hood to retract during sex, exposing the clitoris. This allows you to experience more sensation and sexual satisfaction in intimate situations.

Clitoral unroofing is an in-office procedure not commonly performed by many women’s health providers because of the extremely sensitive nature of the clitoris. At Tideline Center for Health & Aesthetics, our providers can help you learn more about this unique procedure and our knowledgeable approach.

Misconceptions About Clitoral Unroofing

It’s important to note that clitoral unroofing has many misconceptions. Firstly, you may instead benefit from clitoral hood reduction if you have excess skin that hangs over the clitoris, preventing stimulation. Clitoral hood reduction excises the extra skin, allowing for more contact with the clitoris during sex. These two procedures are different, and our intimate health providers can help you select the most appropriate option.

Secondly, clitoral unroofing does not surgically manipulate the clitoris itself. There are no incisions or excisions – rather, the hood surrounding the clitoris is simply separated from the glans and a topical cream is applied to prevent it from fusing to the clitoris again. When performed by a skilled and experienced physician, there is little to no negative impact on the clitoris.
