How to Cope with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD)

Not feeling interested in sex can be distressing, especially if it’s not normal for you. Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) can affect women of any age group and affects about 10% of women in total. Although the best way to treat HSDD is by partnering with an intimate health provider, there are other steps you can take to cope with HSDD and recover some of your drive for intimacy.

Reduce Stress

Stress can interfere with anyone’s sexual drive, not just women with HSDD. Chronic stress raises the level of cortisol in your body, which can interfere with a variety of important brain and body functions. If you’ve been feeling stressed lately, it may be playing a role in your disregard for sex. Find ways to manage your stress, like taking time to rest or meditate during the day, cutting down on responsibilities, practicing good self-care, and assessing ways to free up your schedule. With time, you might find that lower stress levels allow you to turn your thoughts toward sex more often.

Get Regular Exercise

Exercise provides a variety of benefits to the body, including the production of important “feel-good” hormones that play a role in sexual drive. It can also enhance blood flow and restore energy, allowing you to feel more proactive about sex and enjoy it more. If you don’t already, get at least 30 minutes of light exercise daily, such as taking a walk with a favorite podcast.

Talk With a Mental Health Professional

A sudden drop in your libido and sexual interest can sometimes be a symptom of mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, which warrants treatment from a mental health professional. Even if it isn’t, a mental health professional such as a sex therapist can help you explore your feelings around sex and discover what might be preventing you from having an interest in it. This is especially important if you’ve experienced relationship troubles surrounding sex or even sexual abuse in the past.

Talk With Your Partner

It’s possible to lose interest in sex because you’re not feeling fulfilled by it. An honest conversation with your sexual partner can let you voice your needs and find ways to enjoy sex more. It can even be helpful to try new things together, whether it’s new toys, media, positions, and more. If you’re finding yourself bored or disinterested in sex, it’s a good time to explore your likes and dislikes and ensure they’re being communicated effectively.

It may also be that you don’t have time for each other because of a busy schedule or other factors. Setting aside time for intimacy can be helpful in this regard.

Meet with an Intimate Health Provider

An intimate health provider can help you explore possible medications and determine what lifestyle factors might be contributing to HSDD. Hormones often play a role in HSDD, and an intimate health provider can help you understand hormone therapy to boost your libido.
