Here are three of the most frequent benign vulvar skin conditions I encounter in practice: 

Epidermal Inclusion Cysts (White Bumps on the Labia)

Epidermal inclusion cysts appear as white or skin-colored bumps on the labia majora. They can range from tiny pin-sized nodules to marble-sized lumps and are filled with keratin, a normal protein found in skin. 

Key Facts: 

• Completely benign 
• Not an STD 
• Not dangerous 

Although harmless, cysts may cause cosmetic concern or occasional irritation. It’s important not to pop them, as this can lead to infection. If removal is desired, these cysts can be painlessly treated in the office through a simple procedure that opens the cyst and removes its contents, often with excellent cosmetic results. 

Angiokeratosis of Fordyce (Red or Purple Spots)

Angiokeratosis of Fordyce appears as tiny red, blue, or purple spots on the labia. These bumps are caused by benign changes in small blood vessels and are neither infectious nor sexually transmitted. 

Treatment: 

• Usually not medically necessary 
• Can be treated safely with laser or cautery if they bleed, cause irritation, or are cosmetically bothersome 

These spots are generally harmless but can be reassuringly evaluated by a professional if there’s concern. 

Skin Tags on the Vulva 

Skin tags are soft, flesh-colored growths that commonly occur on vulvar skin. They are harmless and not related to STDs or cancer. Removal is optional and can be done easily in the office with cautery or laser if they cause discomfort or cosmetic concern.
